I just watched Tom Carroll surfing big waves south of Tasmania for a Discovery Documentary. Freaking AMAZING!! Check it out http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cq4udhRyCKk
The funny thing while I was watching the 60 minutes clip, I was doing some study. The reading I was studying was extolling the virtues of saving money by saving on little everyday things.
The basics of financial planning seem to be based around scrimping and saving. By scrimping I mean cutting buying your coffee out of your weekly expenses to save around $15 a week which totals $780 a year, now that’s nothing to be sneezed at, however I love my Coffee and instant doesn’t really take my fancy!
I could save another $520 a year by dropping my broadband speed, ($10 a week) this is another way of saving a little on Internet costs, which is good, but it may also mean that I get frustrated with the slowness of the connection that I throw the computer out the window! So it may end up costing me in the long term.
Is scrimping and saving just a panacea for people who can’t see through a mountain of debt?
Should some people concentrate on the big things, just like Carroll has in shunning the Pro Tour and going after the Monster Wave.
From my point of view in my personal financial journey, I always get tripped up by buying Cars. if I sold my current car and bought a cheaper car that could do everything I need I would save myself $520 a month, now remember that this is the same amount as I would have saved in a year by decreasing my Broadband Speed.
Do I really need the flash car, the answer is NO.
What am I going to do about it? I should sell it and repay the debt, this will be hard for me as I love my car, but in the scheme of things it is not a big thing that I really need.
The point of this post is to outline that sometimes we should tackle the big obstacles in life, in my short time on this earth I have seen the benefit of concentrating on the Big Things and letting the small things fall as they may.
The Big things will always be the foundation of you, they will hold you up or bring you down…
Time to sell the car
